Mayor Stimpson to light Mobile's first public menorah

Dec 16th, 2014

MOBILE, Ala. - Mayor Sandy Stimpson will light Mobile's very first public menorah on Tuesday, December 16 at 6:30 pm in Bienville Square to kick off the first night of Hanukkah. The menorah will remain in the park for the next eight nights in keeping with Jewish tradition.

"During Hanukkah, the menorah stands as symbol of light to dispel darkness," said Stimpson. "This seems fitting as this is a bright time in Mobile's history as we light the city's very first public menorah. Mobile has a strong heritage of embracing people of different faiths, and I think tonight embodies the spirit of One Mobile."

Following the menorah lighting, spectators will also enjoy a performance from fire juggler Aaron Antioch.

This family friendly event will also feature free crafts, glow in the dark t- shirts, hot latkes, jelly doughnuts, gelt, candy filled dreidels and music.
