Mayor Stimpson to host annual Lighting of the Tree

MOBILE, Ala. - Mayor Sandy Stimpson announced today that the City of Mobile will host the annual Lighting of the Tree ceremony in Bienville Square at 5 p.m. on Friday, November 21.

Mayor Stimpson and Santa Claus will co-host the event along with emcee Gene Murrell of 92ZEW.

Families are invited to pose with Santa, play in the snow, check out Uncle Joe's Rolling zoo and enjoy many other activities available for the young and the young at heart. Guests can also enjoy live performances from the Dunbar Dancers and Mobile International Festival musicians Mare and Nomade.

The Salvation Army Canteen will be on-site with free coffee and hot chocolate. Come "hear the bells ring," as the Salvation Army of Coastal Alabama kicks off their 2014 Red Kettle Campaign for the City of Mobile. Mayor Stimpson will make the first Red Kettle donation drop of 2014 on behalf of the City of Mobile.

The switch for The Lighting of the Tree and the Ceiling of Lights down Dauphin Street will be thrown promptly at 6:10 p.m., so be sure to get there in plenty of time to enjoy all of the events of the evening. For more details, please visit the website, www.specialeventsmobile.org.

Last week, Mayor Stimpson announced that Mobile is reinventing its Christmas festivities.

"This is only the beginning of Christmas celebrations in Mobile," said Stimpson. "More is still to come, so be on the lookout for exciting announcements in the days ahead."
