Mayor Stimpson sponsors resolutions to restore sidewalks

Feb 12th, 2016

Mayor Stimpson is sponsoring resolutions to spend almost $2 million on restoring sidewalks throughout the City of Mobile. The Administration calls on the Mobile City Council to vote on the legislation during Tuesday's council meeting so work can begin as soon as possible.

The resolutions award contracts to Harwell & Company and Asphalt Services, Inc. and upon City Council passage a notice to proceed will be given to the contractors to begin work.

"Because it impacts every citizen in the City, we must execute year one of our Capital Improvement Plan effectively and efficiently," said Mayor Stimpson. "Parents need smooth sidewalks to push their strollers. Runners and walkers need smooth sidewalks to avoid injuries. By undertaking these sidewalk projects across Mobile, we are setting into motion much-needed repairs to fix what has been broken for decades in our City."

Contracts were awarded to the most qualified, lowest bidders. This was the most comprehensive, inclusive procurement process to date. During the course of the bid solicitation, the Stimpson Administration informed as many qualified businesses as possible via email, phone calls, speaking engagements and during Mobile Chamber Growth Alliance Task Force meetings. The City also hosted its very first Industry Day and a pre-bid meeting for all interested contractors.

As part of the new supplier diversity program, the Administration has created a subcontracting plan that will target minority, women-owned and disadvantaged business entities to assist the two contractors.

The City now has an online vendor registration and vendor information portal that will allow the vendors to receive bid solicitations, update information, view payments and other performances. The next Vendor Town Hall Meeting on March 9th will focus on the new portal, the registration process and future bid opportunities.
