Mayor Stimpson seeks approval of litter ordinance

MOBILE, Ala. - Mayor Sandy Stimpson today called on members of the Mobile City Council to approve legislation proposed by his administration that will strengthen the city's laws on litter enforcement.

Stimpson said he has been working for the past several months to develop new guidelines aimed at making Mobile a safer and cleaner city.

That effort, which includes multiple city departments along with public and private sector groups, includes a series of proposed changes to the city's litter laws.

An amended litter ordinance is on the City Council agenda for this week's meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, June 25, 2014.

Stimpson said the new ordinance will provide the foundation for his administration's campaign against litter and blight, and that its approval is an important step toward his goal of making Mobile the safest, most business- and family-friendly city in America by 2020.

"We have the potential to be one of the most exciting and beautiful cities in America," said Mayor Stimpson. "For far too long, we have allowed litter to pollute our streets, our green spaces and our waterways. It's time for change. Great cities are clean cities with vibrant neighborhoods, an engaged citizenry and a sense of pride."
