Mayor Stimpson proposes ice skating rink for the holiday season

Sep 4th, 2015

MOBILE, Ala. - Mayor Sandy Stimpson is introducing a proposal to create the City of Mobile's very first outdoor ice skating rink.

"Last year, I made a promise to the Citizens of Mobile that our Christmas celebration would be bigger and better than ever before," said Mayor Stimpson. "The holiday season is an important time for our community to come together, and this is one way we can all celebrate."

The rink would open at Cooper Riverside Park on November 12 and run through January 12 for citizens and guests to enjoy during the holiday season. This is a part of the Mayor's Tourism Initiative to package together the City's arts, cultural, attraction and event amenities as a world class destination.

"Our citizens and guests can enjoy something you don't typically see in southern cities," said Mayor Stimpson. "There is no better place to skate than on the waterfront of Mobile, Alabama, with our beautiful skyline as a backdrop. This is a winter treat folks can enjoy from Thanksgiving through New Year's and the Moon Pie Drop."

The contract, submitted for the City Council's agenda on Tuesday, would authorize Magic Ice USA Inc. to install, operate and maintain the rink for a cost of $132,350. The City expects to recoup the majority of these costs through reasonable rental rates.
