Jan 26th, 2015

MOBILE, Ala. - Mayor Sandy Stimpson joined the mayors from Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa for a two-day retreat in Birmingham to discuss public safety.

The summit was the latest in a series of meetings among Alabama's "big-city" mayors to share best practices and solutions to problems facing their municipalities.

The latest summit, which began Sunday and concluded Monday, included public safety officials from each of the cities. Stimpson was accompanied by Mobile Police Chief Jim Barber and Rear Admiral Rich Landolt, the Executive Director of Public Safety for the City of Mobile.

"This is a significant opportunity to work alongside other cities in Alabama to create safer neighborhoods for our citizens," said Stimpson. "We used the time together to share ideas on how to increase safety measures in our city. Listening and learning from other cities' successes and failures on crime and safety will move Mobile closer towards our goal of becoming the safest city in America by 2020."

Mayor William Bell of Birmingham, Mayor Tommy Battle of Huntsville, Mayor Todd Strange of Montgomery and Mayor Walt Maddox of Tuscaloosa attended the retreat. The mayors also met with Governor Robert Bentley during the retreat.
