Mayor Stimpson honors Martin Luther King Jr.

Jan 20th, 2014

MOBILE, Ala. - Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson made the following statement in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:

"Today we pause to remember the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and his dream of true equality for all Americans.

"As we continue the important work of realizing Dr. King's dream, we must recommit ourselves individually and collectively to his quest for progress.

"Where Dr. King saw injustice, he didn't wait for someone else to handle it. He took up his cross for the battle and the battle was won. Today, we are not where we need to be, but our nation and community is indeed better because of his leadership.

"We are called to work together to realize his commitment to social justice, non-violence, and equality. There's no more important moment for those principles than today.

"In honor of Dr. King, I join all of our citizens in the ongoing effort to break down the barriers that divide us, and to remember his sacrifice as we seek to build a better Mobile and America for future generations to come."

Stimpson observed Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by speaking to members of the Port City chapter of the National Organization of Blacks in Government at Bishop State Community College in Mobile.

Stimpson also served as marshal of the annual MLK Jr. Day march in Mobile.
