Mayor Stimpson delivers snow at Mobile's first Winter Wonderland

Dec 5th, 2014

MOBILE, Ala. - The City of Mobile will host its very first Winter Wonderland on Saturday, December 20 in Cathedral Square during the annual Christmas Market. The event will feature no less than six tons of snow in addition to celebrity appearances by characters from Disney's Frozen.

"We don't often see snow in Mobile, but we wanted to give our citizens something special this year," Mayor Stimpson said. "Young or old, nothing puts you in the holiday spirit like a White Christmas. And, of course, everybody loves a princess."

Participants will be able to frolic in the snow and have their photos taken with Frozen's Elsa and Anna in front of the wintry backdrop. Other children's activities include balloon artists, Christmas crafts, face painters and a petting zoo. The event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is free and open to the public.

The market, inspired by the famed Christmas Market in Hamburg, Germany, will feature Christmas gifts, locally grown produce and baked goods. Visitors may also get a preview of the musicians who will be playing at Charlie Brown's Jazz Christmas at the Saenger Theater later that night. The band will play holiday and popular music as well as original songs.

"I want to invite the One Mobile community to bring their families to what I'm sure will be a memorable event," said Stimpson. "You might even catch a glimpse of Sandy Bear too."

The Winter Wonderland is just one of many festive events happening in Mobile during the holiday season.

Beginning at 5 p.m. tonight, Mayor Stimpson will kick off the "Downtown in December" celebration by lighting up Bienville Square with a new Arctic theme. Participants can write letters to Santa followed by a free showing of "Polar Express" on a giant outdoor screen.

On Saturday, December 6, the Downtown Mobile Alliance will host Muggle Quidditch in Cathedral Square beginning at 2 p.m.

Next Friday, December 12, Mobile will attempt to set a world record for the most elves in one place during "ElfWalk." Participants are asked to arrive at Bienville Square in elf costume before 7 p.m.

On December 16, Mayor Stimpson will participate in the city's first Menorah lighting in Bienville Square.
