Mayor Stimpson applauds approval of turf fields for Sage Park

Mar 24th, 2015

MOBILE, Ala. - Mayor Sandy Stimpson thanked members of the Mobile City Council today for their unanimous vote in favor of a proposal to install new turf fields at Sage Park.

Stimpson sponsored a resolution on the council's agenda to transfer $1.6 million from the recreation capital improvement budget to pay for installation of three synthetic turf fields in Sage Park.

"Because the fields in Sage Park are in constant use, it's nearly impossible for grass to grow and the result is that they are in deplorable condition for much of the year," said Mayor Stimpson.

"Artificial turf can provide our young athletes with a durable, high-quality playing surface while protecting them from injury. If we can improve the experience our children have in our parks, we'll have more robust recreation programs, we'll get more children off of the streets and we'll become a safer and more family friendly city."

Stimpson said the use of artificial turf should also help to reduce maintenance costs for the city.

Construction of the new fields should take about four months, so the project should be completed by mid-August, weather permitting.
