Mayor Sam Jones Automates The City’s Tax Filing System

Municipal Information Technology department, in conjunction with other departments have developed a technology system to give businesses an easy and more convenient way of filing sales taxes. They have also created a system that eliminates the printing of payroll checks for nearly 2,500 employees.

The eMobile Online Tax Payment system is an innovative technology initiative designed to provide businesses with the ability to file and pay taxes owed to the City of Mobile electronically via the Internet. The principal goal of this system is to focus on the businesses, our City Departments and their related services.

Q: How long has eMobile been live?
A: Available for all Taxpayer since December 20, 2011.

Q: How many taxpayers are using eMobile?
A: Since going live, there have been 1,509 taxpayers (city only) that have utilized the new system.

Q: How much has been collected using the online system?
A: eMobile has collected $1,659,004.69.

Q: Are Mobile County businesses able to access the system?
A: No, not currently. County businesses will be able to utilize the system by mid-April.

Q: Is it mandatory for businesses to use the system?
A: No.

Q: Is there a convenience fee for using eMobile?
A: Yes. It is .54 cents for each transaction.

Q: What are the benefits of eMobile?
A: Businesses will not only be allowed to pay taxes online, but the system will eventually streamline to the administrative process, as well as, save the city money.

Q: How does it save the city money?
A: Currently, we are paying for lock boxes at area banks. Once fully operational, that cost to the city will go away.

Q: How much did the system cost?
A: Very little because it was designed and developed by the city’s MIT department.


NO MORE PAPER REMPLOYEE PAYROLL OR REIMBURSEMENT CHECKS
In the past few months, MIT has developed software that eliminates the city’s need to print over 2500 employee paychecks.

Q: How does it work?
A: The system has been automated, allowing employees to use their employee number to electronically access the information and download as needed.
