Mayor Pushes for President Obama to Come to Mobile
Jun 11th, 2010
Mayor Sam Jones issued an urgent plea Friday to President Obama to stop in Mobile, the largest city along the Alabama Gulf Coast, that will possibly suffer major losses as a result of the BP oil spill.
“The immediate and long term effects of this spill are going to be devastating to Mobile and this region if it reaches our shoreline,” Jones said Friday after a flyover of the spill with the Alabama National Guard. “Mobile is the major hub of commerce for this area. So goes Mobile, so goes the region.”
Jones said the area’s Port, tourism, maritime, manufacturing, retail and cruising industries will be severely impacted by the worst oil spill in America’s history.
Jones met with area leaders who are extremely concerned about the spill’s immediate effect on Mobile inter-coastal waterways and estuaries. “We want the president to be aware of the potential threat to these crucial natural resources,” the mayor added.
