Jan 9th, 2008

Mayor Sam Jones, as well as, representatives from cities along the Gulf Coast and Mobile’s Congressional delegation, welcomed to Mobile Philip Mangano, the Executive Director of the US Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH). Mr. Mangano, a member of the Bush Administration, talked about the things Mobile is doing to combat homelessness, and the record funding that is going toward fighting the problem.

A check for more than $3 million was presented to Housing First, Inc. and the Mobile-Baldwin Homeless Coalition. The record amount of funding for Mobile will go to several agencies including the Salvation Army, the Dumas Wesley Community Center, Penelope House, and many more.

“This shows that the hard work and dedication that the Homelessness Task Force is putting in is having an effect,” said Mayor Jones. “We are going to use this to further our efforts to put an end to chronic homelessness.”

Mayor Jones and Fairhope Mayor Tim Kant signed the “America’s Road Home” agreement, pledging support for the USICH’s 10-year plan to end chronic homelessness.
