Mayor Jones Welcomes Coach Herman Boone

Mayor Sam Jones welcomed Herman Boone, the legendary football coach immortalized in the Disney movie Remember the Titans. Coach Boone spoke to local high school freshman about the importance of rising above adversity and conflict to reflect a high level of character. Coach Boone was brought to Mobile by the City of Mobile, Quest for Social Justice, Mobile County Public School System, Mobile Area Education Foundation, the Boys and Girls Club and Mobile Community Action.

Remember the Titans was released in 2000 and is based on Boone's experiences as head football coach at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Va., in 1971. The school had recently taken part in court-ordered integration. Coach Boone overcame the adversity and led his team to a perfect 13 – 0 record and state championship.
