Mayor Jones to Host Regional Workforce Summit

On Thursday, May 15, 2008, Mobile Mayor Sam Jones will host the 2008 Summit for Workforce Development, a region-wide meeting of city and county leaders as well as leaders in the fields of workforce readiness, education, and industry. Mayor Jones initiated the summit to create proactive solutions to issues regarding worker needs, better education and improving infrastructure.

The keynote speaker at the summit will be Brent Orrell, Deputy Assistant to Secretary of Employment and Training, U.S. Department of Labor. Also speaking at the summit will be Alabama Postsecondary Chancellor Bradley Byrne. Two breakout sessions, one involving business and the other education, will be conducted. Industries such as steel, maritime, healthcare, and aerospace will be represented on the business panel, and every level of schooling will be covered on the education panel.

The summit will begin with a breakfast session at 7:30 a.m. at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center. It will continue through a lunch session and should wrap up around 2:00 p.m.

The 2008 Summit for Workforce Development is sponsored by the City of Mobile, Mobile County, Mobile Works, Inc., Community Foundation of South Alabama, Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, Mobile Area Education Foundation, Mobile Area Association of Realtors, and Regions Bank.
