Mayor Jones to Host First Impression Symposium

Jul 6th, 2009

On Thursday, July 16, Mayor Sam Jones, Keep Mobile Beautiful and the Neighborhood and Community Affairs Department of the City of Mobile will host a First Impression Symposium. The Symposium will be held at Junior League Headquarters, 57 North Sage Avenue from 8:00 – 11:30 a.m. Call 208-6029 for reservations.

The purpose of the Symposium is to generate public awareness regarding the importance of creating and maintaining a clean community image for tourism and economic development efforts and to provide tools, techniques and ideas for “curb appeal” enhancement of both commercial and residential areas in the City of Mobile. The first impression a visitor has of Mobile could make the difference between locating a business here, moving to the area or coming back for future visits.

Our target audience is neighborhood leaders, real estate agents, business leaders, hospitality leaders, Public Housing officials and others who have a vested interest in the appearance of the City of Mobile and surrounding areas.

Presenters will include:

  • Melissa Morrisette – Mobile Area Association of Realtors

  • Herman Tinsley – Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce

  • Ron McConnell – Mobile Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau

  • Carol Hunter – Downtown Mobile Alliance

  • Laura Clarke – City of Mobile Urban Development

  • Cecile Carson – Keep America Beautiful National Trainer

Cecile Carson, a national trainer for Keep America Beautiful, will facilitate and do a Power Point presentation on Economic Development and Community Appearance.

Panelists will use a “round table” discussion format. Each panelist will have about 5 minutes to discuss First Impressions from their professional perspective. Then we will have dialogue among panelists with questions from the audience.

We feel this event is especially timely because of all of the international interest in the Mobile area and the new promotion of Company Counts by the Mobile Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Program Highlights also include:

  • First Impression Award (Community Action Group) – based on overall environmental improvement in their neighborhood

  • Community Building Award (Individual) – based on innovative community communications/motivation

  • Introduction to the Neighborhood College Program

  • Toolkit for Community Improvement
