Mayor Jones to Citizens – “Can the Litter”

Jun 22nd, 2007

Mobile Mayor Sam Jones and the Mobile City Council have a mandate to all citizens and visitors – “Can the Litter.”

As part of the new anti-litter campaign, the first of 200 new litter containers will be dedicated immediately after the council meeting on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 in the Government Plaza Auditorium. The litter containers are being placed throughout the city in high pedestrian traffic areas such as bus stops and busy intersections.

“When you are walking and need to throw something away, we want you to ‘Can the Litter,’” says Mayor Jones, echoing the title of the anti-litter campaign. “These containers are made specifically for people who would otherwise throw their trash on the ground because there was nowhere else to put it.”

This is another step in Mayor Jones’s crackdown on littering in Mobile. Earlier this year, he worked with the City Council to increase fines for littering. Next Saturday, June 30, Mayor Jones will host the first ever Litter Summit at the Z-Technology Center at Hank Aaron Stadium.
