Mayor Jones Supports the Diabetes Walk this Saturday

Oct 10th, 2012

Mayor Sam Jones declared Saturday, October 13th Mobile’s Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes Day. Mayor Jones signed the proclamation at the October 9th City Council Meeting.

Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes will take place on Saturday, October 13th at Bienville Square with registration beginning at 8:00 am and the walk beginning at 9:00 am. The day includes a Health & Wellness Festival, live music, children’s activities and complimentary breakfast and lunch.

Across Alabama and across the country, the American Diabetes Association will hold Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes events to raise awareness about diabetes and money to fight a disease that affects so many. Walkers secure donations from family members, friends, co-workers and neighbors. These proceeds benefit the Association, which funds diabetes research for a cure, delivers services to hundreds of communities, and gives voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes. Diabetes is a major cause of heart disease and stroke. It is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.

Most Step Out participants join or form Corporate, Family, Club, School or Church Teams, but individual walkers are welcome, too. Locally, the ADA already has over 55 teams registered including the Mobile Infirmary Team, Juvenile Court of Mobile Team and the Heroes Sports Bar & Grille Team. Mobile’s goal is to raise $100.000 through Step Out. National sponsors also provide critical funding and special thanks go to: Novo Nordisk, Walgreens, Cary's® Sugar Free Syrup, Equal® 0 Calorie Sweetener and PureVia® All Natural Zero Calorie Sweetener.

Walking is one of the best forms of exercise for people with diabetes and helps to control glucose levels; and Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes provides an opportunity for people come together for a fun, healthy activity.
