Mayor Jones Removes Non-Public Safety Take Home Cars

May 31st, 2012

Effective Friday, June 1, Mobile Mayor Sam Jones has removed 77 of the vehicles taken home by city employees. The vehicles are assigned to non-public safety departments in the city. They are:

Mayor’s Office – 3;
Revenue – 7;
Public Services – 40;
Urban Development – 27.

Instead of being driven to employees’ residences, the vehicles will now be parked strategically at various city facilities (Western Administrative Complex and Police precincts).

“In no way does this mean these vehicles are not needed to assist employees in doing their jobs,” the mayor said. “They are needed, but this action will hopefully save needed dollars for the city.”

The mayor has also amended the city’s Vehicle Policy, disallowing incidental personal use of the vehicles.
