Mayor Jones Recognizes Carolyn Akers for Winning Alabamian of the Year

Mayor Sam Jones recognized Mobile Area Education Foundation CEO Carolyn Akers for being named Alabamian of the Year by the Anniston Star. Below is the wording for the proclamation that was presented to Carolyn:

WHEREAS, Carolyn Akers, as CEO of the Mobile Area Education Foundation, has become an integral part of Team Mobile by dedicating so much of her time and talents to improving the learning experience of the youth in our community; and

WHEREAS, These efforts were formally and justly acknowledged by the Anniston Star recognizing her as the 2012 Alabamian of the Year, an honor that goes to someone who made a significant mark on events over the past year; someone who lived up to the state creed’s dictate ‘to foster her advancement within the statehood of the world’; and

WHEREAS, Carolyn’s achievements are evidenced by the improvements made in Mobile County’s schools; her goals include closing the achievement gap among underprivileged students, urging high school dropouts to attain their diploma, and increasing the district’s graduation rate to 80 percent by 2020; and

WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that we join with the chorus of those who have honored Carolyn Akers for her much-needed crusade for the improvement of our students’ learning environment and overall success; now therefore let it be

RESOLVED, That I, Samuel L. Jones, Mayor of the City of Mobile, along with the Mobile City Council, do hereby proclaim Thursday, March 21, 2013 in the City of Mobile
