Mayor Jones Honors State's First Baptist Church

Jul 5th, 2006

Mayor Sam Jones announced that Monday, July 10, 2006 will forever be known as Stone Street Baptist Church Day, honoring the church on its 200th anniversary. Pastor Milton Saffold and members of the church accepted the proclamation at a recent city council meeting.

Organized in 1806, Stone Street is the oldest Baptist church in Alabama, actually predating the state. Mayor Jones praised the congregation for overcoming obstacles and persevering through tough times when others would falter.

Councilman Fred Richardson serves as a deacon at the church. He joined Mayor Jones, Council President Reggie Copeland, and Councilman William Carroll, who represents Stone Street Baptist Church on the council, in presenting the proclamation.

Also honored at the council meeting were seven recipients of scholarships from Mobile Works to attend the Enterprise-Ozark Aviation College. These young people participated in the Dual Enrollment partnership between the Mobile County Public School System and Enterprise Ozark Community College.

Students from area High Schools including Bryant, Davidson, LeFlore, Murphy, Satsuma and Theodore, who were interested in Aviation Careers were able to enroll in course work during their junior and senior years in High School. This course work was taken at the Aviation College and earned post-secondary credits for the students.

The Mobile Works Scholarship recipients will continue their studies at the Aviation College with the goal of earning an Associate Degree.
