Leadership Mobile and City of Mobile to Host Single Stream Saturday Events
Aug 15th, 2017
Mobile, Ala - The City of Mobile and Leadership Mobile's Environment Project Group, a program of Mobile United, will be hosting Single Stream Saturday from 8 - 11 a.m. on Aug. 19, 2017. The events are designed to promote the new single stream recycling locations in Midtown and at Langan Park. To increase the rate of recycling, the City is transitioning to a single stream method with more locations to create a more accessible, less burdensome experience for citizens. The partnership between City of Mobile and Leadership Mobile to promote single stream recycling is another example of the city's dedication to recycling. The Environment Project Group has been working closely with the City of Mobile to further Mobile's recycling efforts.
"Our ultimate goal is to create a more robust recycling program while eliminating litter throughout our City," said Mayor Stimpson. "When recycling is more convenient and less confusing, more people recycle and people who recycle are less tolerant of litter."
During the event, volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about single stream recycling. Additionally, the first 50 recyclers at each location will receive a free blue recycling bin, sponsored by Thompson Engineering, Heath Parker State Farm Insurance Agency, Ship Shape Urban Farms, Moe's Southwest Grill and 1702 Real Estate.
Normal hours of operation are from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday for both recycling locations. The Langan Park Recycling Center is located at the City's Western Administrative Complex across from the Mobile Museum of Art and the Midtown Center is located off Pinehill Dr. behind the Police Headquarters. More single stream locations will be offered in the future.
All recyclable material will be placed in one container at each location and sorting of recyclable material is no longer required. Accepted recyclable materials include glass (clear & colored), paper (newspapers, inserts, cardboard, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, paper bags, pizza boxes, cardboard egg cartons, dry pet food bags), plastics 1-7 (produce clamshells, plastic milk jugs, plastic detergent bottles), and metals (aluminum cans & lids, steel cans & lids, metal pots & pans, tin foil, foil baking pans). The complete list of materials that can and cannot be recycled at the new single stream locations is available at www.cityofmobile.org/recycle.
