LAVRETTA PARK READY FOR CHILDREN!

Jun 14th, 2003

Newly Renovated Playground Re-opens

It's time to play!

The new playground equipment is ready; the jogging and walking path is finished; and the new rock climbing wall is up. What's missing? The children!

This Saturday, June 14, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. the Park re-opens for everyone to come check out the new playground equipment and see what the community and City of Mobile have accomplished. Spring Hill's Lavretta Park is located off Old Shell Road, just West of Bit and Spur.

The eight acre park was originally developed in the 1970's and until early 2002 had received little if any attention. That's when Kellie Myers and her husband Thomas stepped in. They live near the park and wanted a nice place for their young daughters to play. But, this park as it was, didn't fit the bill. So, Kellie, Thomas and others initiated a project in conjunction with the City of Mobile and District 7 Councilman Stephen Nodine to redevelop the park. The plans included installing new playground equipment for various age groups, building a jogging/walking path around the perimeter, and improving existing facilities.

While everyone agreed Lavretta Park desperately needed this facelift, there wasn't enough money available. So, Kellie and her steering committee set their sights on raising $85-thousand dollars from the community to go along with a match from the city. It only took them a little over a year to accomplish this monumental task. But, instead of raising $85-thousand dollars, the committee collected $105-thousand dollars.

Now everything is set. Please join ParkProject08 members, neighbors, family and friends for this dedication ceremony Saturday, June 14, 2003 at 10:00 a.m.
