Lavretta Park Celebrates Anniversary with new plans

Jun 24th, 2004

A Great Success

When Lavertta Park re-opened last year with brand new playground equipment, a walking trail and even a rock climbing wall-it was almost perfect-almost. Now, members of ParkProject08, neighbors and District 7 Mobile City Councilman Stephen Nodine are at it again. They’re celebrating a year of fun, play and a lot of laughter at the park with plans for even more improvements.

Saturday, June 26, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. the community will come together to celebrate the first anniversary of Lavretta Park’s redevelopment and find out what’s in store for the future. Children and their parents are invited to help kick off the celebration by participating in the anniversary parade around the walking trail. "Decorate your bike, trike, wagon or stroller and be part of the fun to show what this park is all about and join the fun", said Kellie Myers, who spearheaded the ParkProject08 committee.

"This park has been incredibly successful," said Councilman Nodine. "And there’s a lot more to come." Plans are in the works now to improve the ballfields next to the playground; construct new and better restroom facilities; and hang layered shading cloths suspended by cables to provide cover from direct sunlight during the summer season. According to Nodine, "this park is a huge asset for the City of Mobile. Everytime I bring my son here and join all the other parents and their children playing and enjoying this beautiful facility it reminds me of what we’ve accomplished." But, Nodine adds "it wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of the community."

Nodine has been an advocate for city parks, securing $2.6-million for the 5 parks in district 7. The next park scheduled for a facelift and new equipment is Municipal Park on Ziegler Blvd. Fundraising is underway now to build what is called a "Boundless Playground" for children of all levels of physical ability. This is a project of the Alabama District Kiwanis and is one of five in the state selected by the Kiwanis for this kind of playground. Councilman Nodine has directed $100-thousand dollars to go toward purchasing and building the new playground equipment. Construction could begin as early as this August. Plans for the Boundless Playground will be displayed Saturday at Lavretta Park.
