Greetings!

It was a hectic summer around City Hall. We are so
happy to welcome our newest citizens in West Mobile
after the annexation, and we look forward to providing
excellent services to them and throughout the city. As
fall begins, there are several exciting things
happening around Mobile. Please read on for more
information.

Sincerely,

Samuel L. Jones
Mayor

Mobile Welcomes Newest Citizens
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mayor Sam Jones and the City of Mobile welcomed its
newest citizens on Tuesday, September 18 after a
successful annexation election. Residents in Mobile
Terrace, Cadillac Park and areas along Airport Blvd
and Shillinger Road voted to take advantage of the
many excellent city services that Mobile offers. The
victory marked the first major annexation for Mobile in
over 50 years.
"We're so happy that citizens in that area decided to
join us - and we look forward to improving their quality
of living," said Mayor Jones. "One of our biggest goals
was to give each neighborhood their own voice. I am
very happy in the fact that we were able to accomplish
that."
The citizens of the annexed areas will enjoy improved
public safety, free garbage and trash collection, zoning
improvements and much more. A map of the annexed
area is shown at right. If you have questions about
your home or business being affected by the
annexation, call Mobile 311 (208-7999 from outside
the city or on a cell phone).
City of Mobile Starts Alert Notification System
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A Category 5 hurricane looms in the Gulf of Mexico and
meteorologists are predicting Mobile as the likely
recipient of the storm's wrath. An 18-wheeler carrying
hazardous chemicals overturns on Interstate 10 near
heavily populated downtown Mobile. A four-year-old
girl is abducted from Bienville Square. The Mobile City
Council is considering changing the city's sign
ordinance.

Though the above situations are hypothetical, city,
county and Emergency Management Agency officials
know all too well that this scenario can instantly
become reality. The three entities have partnered on
an agreement with Connect-CTY, a California-based
company to provide quick and reliable personalized
voice, e-mail and text/SMS messages to thousands of
residents and businesses in minutes.

Under the agreement, the city, county and EMA which
will encompass the nine smaller municipalities, can
send voice messages to targeted constituents and
staff members on the following: Town Hall Meetings,
Hazardous Spills, Weather Emergencies, Missing
Children, Employee Notifications, Flood Alerts, Fires,
Response Team Mobilizations, Media Updates, Crime
Prevention, Neighborhood Watch Alerts, Interagency
Communication.

BayFest Brings Downtown Alive
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The streets of downtown Mobile will come alive this
weekend with the sights and sounds of BayFest. An
anticipated 200,000 guests will converge around
Bienville Square for three days and nights to the
strains of over 125 live musical acts.
This year's packed lineup includes Ludacris, Leann
Rimes, Velvet Revolver, Daughtry, Chaka Khan, Boyz II
Men, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and Alice in
Chains. Festival-goers stroll among historic buildings
and through parks in a site that is directly adjacent to
the city's entertainment district while BayFest's 9
stages offer continuous music for every taste,
including country, classic rock, alternative, jazz, R&B,
Cajun, reggae, electronica, folk, gospel and more.
One of the festival's stages, The Launching Pad, is
specifically designed for aspiring musicians only, in
order to support and showcase those who reach for
musical greatness.
Pardon Our Progress - Road Closures
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There are three major road closures that you need to
know about during the next few months. First, the
bridge along Museum Drive (near Langan Park) is
closed for repairs or replacement. It will be closed for
the next few months.

Dauphin Street, between Ashley Drive and Montlimar
Creek (east of I-65) will be periodically restricted to
one lane in each direction. This drainage project will
take about two months.

Florida Street from Airport Blvd to Emogene Street is
closed in both directions. The project is scheduled to
last through February 29, 2008. All motorists need to
find alternate routes. For more information call Mobile
