More Langan Park Improvements
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As the pedestrian bridge is being completed at
Langan Park, the jewel of Mobile is getting another
facelift. This weekend, a joint effort the Mobile
Community Corrections Center and the City of Mobile
Parks and Recreation Department, initiated by Judge
Rusty Johnston, will clear our overgrowth, haul away
debris and trash and mow the park. They will also be
focusing on cleaning up the banks of the lake, over
which the new bridge spans.
Corrections Officers, along with community service
workers and Metro Jail inmates will be providing the
labor while workers with Mobile Parks and Recreation
provide the equipment. The 75 workers will be
cleaning up the park this Saturday morning. Langan
Park will remain open, but the clean up activities are
not open to the public.
This clean up is another step in the beautification
and improvements at Langan Park. Other initiatives
included the pedestrian bridge, the upcoming
completion of the boundless playground, and the
removal of hundreds of geese and ducks.
It's Easy to be Ungreasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In the Deep South, all things deep fried lead to a
whole lot of grease. So the big question is, where
does it all go? The City of Mobile, Mobile Area Water
& Sewer System and Keep Mobile Beautiful hope it's
not down the drain. That's why we are introducing a
new residential cooking grease recycling program -
It's Easy to be Ungreasy.

The program will help keep the Mobile area
environment healthy by preventing costly sanitary
sewer overflows. Starting now, grease recycling
containers can be picked up at grease recycling
locations throughout Mobile. Once the containers are
full, they can be dropped off at the same locations.
MAWSS will see that the grease is properly recycled.
residents can also bring their own sealed containers
to the grease recycling locations.

Here are a
list of the container pick up and drop off locations:

  • MAWSS Main Office - 207 N. Catherine Street

  • MAWSS West Mobile Location - 4725-B Moffett
    Road (Park Forest Plaza Shopping Center)

  • Keep Mobile Beautiful Metro Recycling Center -
    1451 Government Street

Adding Green to DeTonti Square
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This Saturday, the City of Mobile, along with the
DeTonti Square Neighborhood Association are making
the Historic District a little more green. Thanks to a
grant from the Alabama Cooperative Extension
Service secured by the City of Mobile's Urban
Forestry Department, more than 200 trees are being
planted to replace those damaged or destroyed by
Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina. The trees being planted
include 130 Crepe Myrtles, 63 Live Oaks and 13 Little
Gem Magnolias.
DeTonti Square is one of the City of Mobile's Historic
Districts. Its nine-block area includes architectural
marvels, ranging in style. These include the raised
Creole Cottage, 19th Century brick townhouses and
frame Victorian cottages. Its boundaries include
Adams Street to the north, North Claiborne Street to
the west, St. Anthony Street on the south, and
North Conception Street on the east.
