Greetings!

One of the top priorities of my administration is
making and keeping this beautiful city clean. That's
why I'm making changes to the city's litter ordinance
to make enforcement tougher. And I'm using every
tool I have, including several city departments, to
make it happen.

Please read on to find out
more about my efforts to clean up litter and other
exciting things going on in the City of Mobile.

Sincerely,

Samuel L. Jones
Mayor

Mayor Jones Cracks Down on Litter
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mayor Sam Jones is cracking down on litter bugs by
putting more teeth into litter enforcement in the City
of Mobile. The City Council is set to approve the
Mayor's ordinance to change that fee to a minimum
of $250 and a maximum of $500.
“We want
the citizen stakeholders to have a city free of litter
that they can be proud of,” said Mayor Jones. “It is
not our goal to issue fines; it’s our goal to have a
clean city. Enforcement is the best way to deter
litter bugs.”
The ordinance will cover a variety of situations such
as illegal dumping, throwing trash from cars, having
trash in your yard, and sweeping litter into the
street. The City of Mobile is also making sure people
have other place to dispose of trash. Two hundred
trash receptacles will be placed throughout the city
next to bus stops, restaurants and other spots where
people tend to litter. The fines are also increasing
for people caught putting ads on public rights-of-
way. Officials say any type of litter brings down the
image of the city.
Mobile Regional Senior Community Center Construction Deal Reached
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mayor Sam Jones and Councilwoman Connie Hudson
were all smiles this week as negotiations on the
construction of the Mobile Regional Senior Community
Center were reached. Ollinger Construction Co.
signed a $4.7 million contract with the city to build
the center. The center will be located on Hillcrest
Road.

"This center will be a great asset for the city," Jones
said. "Serving citizens throughout the
city."

Hudson, a staunch advocate for the
center said she was "pleased that the project is
moving ahead."

No-Insurance Tickets Becoming Easier and Cheaper to Be Paid
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In an effort to deal with a sharp increase in no-
insurance tickets at Municipal Court, city officials are
offering a way for insured motorists, who just didn’t
have the proof on insurance on them, to pay a small
fee to get out of it.
Starting November 1,
2006 motorists who are ticketed for having no proof
of automobile insurance – that have a valid insurance
policy at the time the citation is given to them – can
bring that proof to any of the police precincts or
police headquarters and pay a $20 fee. This
is only for first time offenders.
Previously,
motorists had to pay over $100 in court costs.
Here are the locations where you can pay:
  • Police Headquarters – 2460 Government
    Street
  • 1st Precinct – 850 Virginia Street
  • 2nd Precinct – 3725 Airport Blvd
  • 3rd Precinct – 2165 St. Stephens Road
  • 4th Precinct – 4712 Moffett Road
Bel Air Bridge Update
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

City officials have their fingers crossed, in
anticipation that construction on the popular Bel Air
Bridge over Eslava Creek remains on schedule.

"So far, things are looking good," said City Engineer,
Bob Vogtner. "However, the timing is contingent on
the arrival of materials and weather interruptions."

We'll keep you posted on further updates.
