Greetings!
It was with great pleasure that I welcomed two very
special guests to Mobile recently. One fed the minds
of our youth with an inspirational story of overcoming
adversity. The other fed our hearts, and stomachs,
with a story about food and fun. Both were greeted by
warm temperatures and warmer receptions. I hope
you read on for more about their appearances and
other great things going on in the City of Mobile.
Sincerely,
Samuel L. Jones Mayor

Mayor Jones Welcomes Paula Deen for Some Home Cooking
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mayor Sam Jones and Council President Reggie
Copeland welcomed Food Network Chef Paula Deen
with gifts from Mobile at the Arthur Outlaw Convention
Center on Monday, May 1, 2007. More than 4,000
hungry fans gathered to hear the southern lady talk
about her new cooking and her life.
Deen owns The Lady & Sons restaurant in Savannah,
Georgia, where she resides, and runs it with her sons,
Jamie and Bobby. She has also published four
cookbooks. She is known for her bubbly, "down-home"
personality, which makes her a favorite among TV
viewers.
Mobile Students Remember the Titans
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mayor Sam Jones welcomed Herman Boone, the
legendary football coach immortalized in the Disney
movie Remember the Titans. Coach Boone
spoke to local high school freshmen about the
importance of rising above adversity and conflict to
reflect a high level of character. Coach Boone was
brought to Mobile by the City of Mobile, Quest for Social
Justice, Mobile County Public School System, Mobile
Area Education Foundation, the Boys and Girls Club
and Mobile Community Action.
Remember the Titans was released in 2000
and is based on Boone's experiences as head
football coach at T.C. Williams High School in
Alexandria, VA in 1971. The school had recently taken
part in court-ordered integration, which caused strife
among the students and the community. Coach
Boone overcame the adversity and led his team to a
perfect 13 - 0 record and state championship.

Market in the Park is Back by Popular Demand
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Market in the Park, West Mobile's local farmers'
market, sponsored by the City of Mobile, will open for
the Spring season on Thursday, May 10th from 3 p.m.
until 7 p.m. on the grounds of the Mobile Museum of
Art in Langan Park.
As a part of Mayor Jones' new City department,
Neighborhood & Community Services, this initiative is
designed to serve West Mobilians with the freshest
produce available, while simultaneously helping to
support our local economy. The idea began last year
with the support of Councilmembers Reggie
Copeland and Gina Gregory, and was so well received
that we are bringing the market back.
The Mobile Museum of Art graciously serves as host of
our market by providing live music and free admission
throughout the season until July 26th.
It's Easier to be Ungreasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's Easy to be Ungreasy, the cooking grease recycling
program of Keep Mobile Beautiful and the Mobile Area
Water and Sewer System, is expanding. Empty grease
recycling containers can be picked up and full ones
can be dropped off at:
- Greer's Food Tiger - 1360 Navco Road
- Greer's Food Tiger - 2980 Springhill Avenue
- Greer's Food Tiger - 670 S. Broad Street
- Greer's Food Tiger - 1342 Springhill Avenue
- Greer's Food Tiger - 184 S. Florida Street
- Greer's Food Tiger - 6350 McCrary Road Extension
- MAWSS Main Office - 207 N. Catherine Street
- MAWSS Branch Office - 4725-B Moffett Road

Since the program's inception, more than 8,000
people have picked up recycling containers resulting
in over 1,700 gallons of grease being collected. The
grease is recycled into animal feed, industrial
lubricants and bio-diesel fuel. This is a big step in the
right direction in the effort to protect the environment
and the public sanitary sewer system.

Mobile is StormReady
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The City of Mobile has been named StormReady by
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration's (NOAA) National Weather Service
(NWS). StormReady helps arm America's
communities with the communication and safety skills
they need to save lives and protect property. To be
recognized as StormReady, communities must meet
guidelines established by the NWS in partnership with
federal, state, and local emergency management
professionals.
The StormReady program encourages communities
to take a proactive approach to
improving local hazardous weather operations. The
program is a "win" situation for everyone involved:
community leaders, the NWS, emergency managers,
and the general public. Here are just a few of the
benefits your community will realize once you become
StormReady:
- Improves the timeliness and effectiveness of
hazardous weather warnings for the public;
- Provides detailed and clear recommendations
which will help local emergency managers establish
and improve effective hazardous weather operations. It
can also help justify costs and purchases needed to
support hazardous mitigation and emergency
response plans;
- Rewards local hazardous weather mitigation
programs that have achieved a desired performance
level;
- Provides a means to possibly acquire additional
Community Rating System points assigned by the
National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP);
- Provides an image incentive to communities,
which once recognized, can identify themselves as
being StormReady; and,
- Helps ensure your community is prepared for
other civil emergencies.
Boundless Playground Opens in Langan Park
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mobile Mayor Sam Jones and Councilwoman Gina
Gregory officially dedicated the Boundless Playground
and Pedestrian Bridge at Langan Park on Friday, April
20, 2007.
The Boundless Playground is designed so that
children of all abilities can enjoy the park. It was
started by the Kiwanis Club of Mobile, but when
funding ran dry, the Mobile City Council and the Mobile
County Commission stepped up to complete the
project. The Pedestrian Bridge connects the
playground and park area of Langan Park to the
Mobile Museum of Art across Three Mile Creek. Both
projects were completed by Peavy Construction.
These are two of the many improvements that are
being made to Langan Park. Other enhancements
include new walking trails, the removal of
overpopulated ducks and geese, additional courts at
the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center and a new
clubhouse at Azalea City Golf Course.
