Greetings!
There is so much to celebrate in our city
right now, we want to throw a party the best
way we know how - a Mardi Gras parade! We
are making progress as a city because we are
coming together to make Mobile a great place
to live, work and play. That's why we want
you to take part in the parade. Please read
on for more about that event and several
others going in around our great city.
Sincerely,
Samuel L. Jones Mayor
Celebrate Your Success with a Mardi Gras-Style Parade
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A new chapter in the story of Mobile has been
written, and now it's time for us to have
some fun. Come downtown for a Celebrate
Mobile parade on Friday, June 20, to
celebrate the jobs and economic development
coming to our city thanks to several recent
announcements.
The parade will kick off at 6:30 p.m. It will
start at the corner of Canal and Claiborne
and travel west on Canal. It will then turn
up Washington and head east down Government.
From there, it will turn north at
Conception, east on St. Francis and then
south on Royal. It will end by heading west
on Church then south past the Civic Center on
Clairborne.
The day before the parade, there will be a
performance by "Mobile in Motion", a dance
troupe from the Mobile County Public School
System. It's going on at the Saenger Theatre
starting at 7 p.m. The performance is free,
so come enjoy this great event.
Fox Business Channel Spotlights Mobile Economy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Fox Business Channel aired a segment on
June 6, 2008 about the tanker project won by
Northrop-Grumman and EADS. Those companies
will build refueling tankers for the United
States Air Force at Brookley Field, creating
thousands of jobs locally and tens of
thousands of jobs across America.
The Gulf Coast is a great place to live, and
Mobile has become the premier destination for
folks to call home along its sandy-white
coast. But our proximity to the water also
means we have to sometimes deal with
hurricanes, and June 1 officially kicked off
the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Mayor Sam
Jones and the City Council want you to be as
informed as possible, and that is why we have
the Connect-CTY Alert Notification System.
Right now, everyone who has a publicly listed
telephone number is already in the system,
but you may also provide additional
information such as your cell phone number or
email address for this free service, so that
you can stay connected if you have to
evacuate or if landline service is
unavailable. Participation is free and voluntary.
To add telephone or email information, you
can go to the City's website at
www.cityofmobile.org or call us at Mobile
311. We know your information is important -
and we will never share it with anyone. Our
plan is to be able to contact the entire
city or specific neighborhoods using this new
system.
Paying Traffic Citations Now Quicker and Easier
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Paying citations is much easier with this
month's launch of the City's new Online Court
Service. The system seamlessly blends
telephone and Internet to improve customer
service for obtaining citation information
and paying for violations. The online system
uses technology from Tele-Works, Inc. that is
designed expressly for helping the public
better communicate with local government.
Information about citations and payment
options are available 24/7 by calling (251)
208-5696, or by clicking on "Online Ticket
Payments" at the City's Web site
www.cityofmobile.org. The system provides the
user with information such as date and
location of the offense, court date if any,
and amount due.
"Mobile's Online Court Service uses the
latest customer service technology to help
the City better serve our residents," said
Mayor Sam Jones. "We want to make sure
everyone has the opportunity to take care of
citation payments quickly and efficiently,
with as little hassle as possible."
Kids Days in Bienville is Back
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kids Days in Bienville began Thursday, June 5
with a free summer fun bash from 10 a.m. to 1
p.m. in downtown Mobile's Bienville Square.
Kids will enjoy a variety of fun activities
including face painting, comedy, hands-on art
activities, a petting zoo, clowns and more.
Kids Days in Bienville will continue every
Thursday through July 10. Kids Days will
continue with a new venue this year and host
events in Langan Park on Saturday, July 19
and Saturday, July 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A Mobile tradition for more than 15 years,
Kids Days has attracted thousands of children
to downtown Mobile each summer for free
festivities including performances,
activities and displays. Kids Days is
produced by the City of Mobile Neighborhood
and Community Services. The corporate sponsor
for Kids Days is the Press-Register.
Markets in the Square, Park Going Strong
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mobilians have two choices for Farmer's
Markets this time of year. You can head
downtown on Saturdays for Market in the
Square at Cathedral Square, or on Thursdays
at Market in the Park at the Mobile Museum of
Art. You can pick from locally grown:
tomatoes, potatoes, sweet corn, cantaloupe,
watermelon, seafood, flowers, plants, baked
breads, casseroles, pies, handcrafted goods
and so much more.
Market in the Square, which runs through July
26th, has several activities planned.
Throughout the month of June: Join us on
Father's Day
weekend, as the Gulf Coast Herb Society and
the Mobile County Master Gardners join up and
help spread some delicious tomato lovin' with
the Tomato Tango sandwich sale. Both
organizations will be on hand: one to make
gourmet sandwiches with generously donated
tomatoes; and the other to give out pertinent
information about how to care for your toms
in your own garden!
Market in the Park runs through July 24, and
features other attractions like live music
and cooking demonstrations.
Florida Street Drainage Project Phase 1A Begins
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The City of Mobile Engineering Department has
entered into a contract with John. G. Walton
Construction, Co. for the construction of
Florida Street Drainage Improvements, Phase
IA (South of Emogene Street to North of CN
Railroad). We anticipate construction to
culminate approximately March, 2009. The
design plan is the same plan presented at a
public meeting in 2008.
Phase IA of the project involves dividing the
construction into three separate phases.
During Phase One, the intersection at Florida
Street & Emogene Street will be closed, with
"No Through Traffic" in either direction.
During Phase Two, the intersection of Florida
Street and Emogene Street will re-open and
one lane of local traffic (southbound) will
remain open.
During Phase Three, the contractor will
remove the railroad tracks and install the
culvert, to complete the project.
Access to residences and businesses, while
limited, will remain open during all phases.
