Greetings!

On January 1, 2007, Mobile became a cleaner, tidier
city with the new litter ordinance going into effect. I
want to thank each member of the City Council for
their support in this initiative, which I believe will
present a better image to our citizens, workers and
visitors. But that’s not the only thing that we’re
doing to make the lives of Mobilians better. Read on
to learn more about what Mobile city government is
doing for you.

Sincerely,

Samuel L. Jones
Mayor

New Litter Ordinance Goes into Effect
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mayor Sam Jones urges all citizens to comply with
the City of Mobile’s new Litter Ordinance. The new
ordinance, proposed by Mayor Jones and unanimously
approved by the City Council, goes into effect on
Monday, January 1, 2007. The new ordinance puts
more teeth into enforcement efforts to keep the
natural beauty of Mobile free from litter.
“The appearance of our city speaks to the overall
pride our stakeholders have for Mobile,” said Mayor
Jones. “This new ordinance is an effort to show how
much we care about the image seen by others
around the state, nation and the entire world.”
Under the new ordinance, even so little as flicking a
single cigarette butt to the ground is subject to a
$250 fine and over $150 in court costs. Another
typical offense would be putting your trash or
garbage receptacle out too early. The new City of
Mobile Litter Ordinance, which went into effect on
January 3, 2007, allows for citizens to place trash at
the street no more than forty-eight (48) hours before
the scheduled pickup. It also allows for citizens to
place their garbage receptacle at the street no more
than twenty-four (24) hours before the scheduled
pickup.
City Leaders Break Ground at New Senior Community Center
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

District 6 Councilwoman Connie Hudson’s dream for a
new senior center in West Mobile took a giant step
forward recently. She, along with Mayor Jones,
Councilman Reggie Copeland, Councilman Fred
Richardson and County Commissioner Stephen Nodine
broke ground at the site of the Mobile Regional Senior
Community Center on Hillcrest Road.

“This new Center is much needed for the growing
communities of Mobile,” said Councilwoman
Hudson. “This will enhance the lives of Mobilians for
generations to come.”

The center is designed for Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) designation as a
hurricane shelter with provisions for medical needs
patients and will be built to withstand Category 3
hurricane-force sustained winds. Construction is
expected to last about 11 months.

Ancient Pompeii Coming to Exploreum
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mobile’s Gulf Coast Exploreum will host the prestigious
international exhibition – A Day in Pompeii –January
12 to June 3, 2007. A Day in Pompeii takes visitors
back in time to experience life and death in this
cosmopolitan city. The exhibition features over 250
exceptional objects that lay buried in Pompeii’s ruins
for over 17 centuries. Included are room-size
frescoes, marble and bronze sculptures, jewelry, gold
coins and everyday household items – all of which
evoke the richness and culture of daily life in the
Roman Empire’s favorite vacation resort.
Visitors experience the darkening skies and the
violent sounds of Vesuvius spewing its ash and debris
onto the city. They look upon plaster casts of eight
of the volcano’s victims, frozen in their last moments.
Archeologists made these casts by pouring plaster
into the cavities left in the thick volcanic materials
after the trapped victims’ bodies decayed. Few other
exhibits connect visitors in such an emotional and
personal way with individuals who lived over 2000
years ago.
