Greetings!

I am very proud of our newest City departments,
Mobile CitiSmart and the Office of Neighborhood and
Community Services. Below, you can read about
some very exciting things that are going on in those
departments. They are just another example of what
the City of Mobile is doing for you, the citizen. Also,
with the temperatures dropping, can't you just smell
football in the air? It's coming - in a big way! Read
on for more on these topics and much more.

Sincerely,

Samuel L. Jones
Mayor

CitiSmart Hits the Ground Running
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mobile’s long-awaited CitiSmart accountability system
got started last week when 80 senior city staffers
underwent customer service and leadership training
from noted author/motional speaker Lester Brown.
Brown was hired by Mayor Sam Jones to get the
city’s senior staff prepared for changes that will
result from CitiSmart.
“We want to see more
accountability in city government,” Jones said. “To
achieve that goal, we feel pleasant and efficient
customer service must be at the forefront.”
In addition to the city’s senior staff, Jones said every
frontline employee – from the staffer who issues
business licenses to the call takers with the city’s
311 service request system, will undergo customer
service training.
“Citizens deserve the very
best treatment and delivery of public services,” the
mayor added. “CitiSmart will allow us the ability to
track the progress.”
To gain a better understanding the CitiSmart system,
Jones said each city department head will be
mandated to:
• Report bi-weekly before the
mayor, the CitiSmart coordinator and a panel of
supervisors and justify the day-to-day management
and oversight of their department;
Computerize data as it relates to the spending of
tax dollars, employee productivity and the process of
addressing citizen’s service request orders.
The data must cover a wide range of information
for a two-week period. For instance, the Public Works
Department schedule of addressing pothole. The
department has mandated to address such request in
72 hours. They must also explain why trash pick up
was delayed, as well as, the number of comp and
overtime hours incurred.
CitiSmart Objectives
are:
1. Ensure accountability, reliability
and productivity of city workforce.
2.
Develop and execute effective strategies and tactics
for all delivery of services.
3. Guarantee
swift deployment of resources where needed.
Parking Downtown to Benefit Salvation Army
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Office of Neighborhood & Community Services
has teamed up with the Downtown Parking Diplomats
to create a mechanism whereby any monies put into
certain parking meters on the weekends throughout
the Holiday Season will be directly donated to the
Salvation Army to help with their mission.

Beginning, Friday, December 8, 2006, the meters
surrounding Cathedral & Bienville Squares will be
decorated and have notices put on them to alert the
public that:

“Although parking is free on the
weekends, your generous donation will go directly to
the Salvation Army during this Holiday Season.”

The Downtown Parking Diplomats will handle the
donations by emptying the meters each Friday
evening and collecting the donated monies each
Monday morning. Mayor Sam Jones hopes that
citizens will respond by coming down on the
weekends to eat, shop, visit our wonderful
attractions, and take advantage of this great
opportunity to give back during the Holiday Season.

Mark Your Calendar - Upcoming Council Meeting Changes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Mobile City Council will be on the move for the
December 19, 2006 meeting. The Council will
convene at the Museum of Mobile (111 South Royal
of the Council to meeting in the former City Hall once
Also, with Christmas falling on a Monday this year,
and with City Hall being closed the day after
Christmas, the Council will meet on Wednesday,
December 27, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. in the Government
Plaza Auditorium.
Are You Ready for Some Football - Mobile Style?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The match-up is set for this year's GMAC Bowl to be
played Sunday, January 7, 2007 at Mobile's Ladd-
Peebles Stadium. The eighth annual game will
feature the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles and
the Ohio Bobcats. The game will showcase Mobile on
a national stage as it is aired on ESPN.

Led by Damien Fletcher, Southern Mississippi (8-5)
was the runner-up of the league with one of the top
rushing offenses. Although Fletcher is only a
freshman, he averages more than 100 yards a game
and is the league’s second leading rusher. The Golden
Eagles also have the top scoring defense in
Conference USA, grabbing 15 interceptions this
season.

For Ohio, this is the first time in 38
years that the Bobcats have received a bowl
invitation. They too are led by a fierce running game
with Junior Kalvin McRae rushing for more than 1,100
yards.
