Season's Greetings!

As we wrap up 2006, and head into 2007, I want to
take this opportunity to thank you, the citizens, for
making Mobile the best place to live. We have made
so much progress this year, and we're not about to
slow down. Please enjoy the holidays safely, and
have a happy new year.

Sincerely,

Samuel L. Jones
Mayor

Bridge over Eslava Creek Reopened, Dedicated to Fallen Soldier
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just in time for the last few days of holiday shopping,
The City of Mobile has reopened the bridge on Bel Air
Boulevard that crosses Eslava Creek. With its close
proximity to Colonial Mall Bel Air, the bridge handles a
traffic load of about 15,000 cars each day. In
addition, the bridge has been dedicated in memory of
Cpl. Christopher Edward Mason, a soldier from Mobile
who was killed in action in Iraq last month. Cpl.
Mason, a Baker High School graduate, was a member
of the United States Army’s 82nd Airborne Division.
“It is an honor to dedicate this bridge to Cpl. Mason,
a young man who displayed the best of what an
America should be,” said Mayor Sam
Jones.
“Everyone who crosses this bridge will
remember Christopher Mason, and the tremendous
impact he has made on this City, this State, and this
Country,” Council President Reggie Copeland added.
World's Largest Tennis Center Renamed for Reggie Copeland
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Mobile City Council honored one of its own,
renaming the Mobile Tennis Center for Council
President and sports enthusiast Reggie Copeland.
Councilman Copeland was surprised by Tennis
manager Scott Novak and several members of his
family with the news at this week’s council meeting
held at the Museum of Mobile.

The 50 court
Reggie Copeland/Newton Cox Tennis Center, located
in west Mobile’s Langan Park, is the world’s largest
public tennis facility. Each year, the tennis center
creates an economic impact of more than $28 million
through the various tournaments held there.

Serving as the chief sports activist for the
City of Mobile, Councilman Copeland has overseen the
expansion of the tennis center, renovations of the
courts, and the addition of indoor courts at the
Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center.

the Parkway Branch Library, 1924-B Dauphin Island
Parkway, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00

Mobile Home to Two Recycling Award Winners
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As part of Keep America Beautiful's 2006 Great
American Cleanup, a goal was set to remove and
recycle 30,000,000 plastic bottles from Sam's Club
communities around the country. Keep Mobile
Beautiful accepted the challenge and entered
the "Return the Warmth" contest with six area
schools participating.
These schools collected 5,790 pounds of recyclable
plastic during April and May last year. Two schools
placed in the top 50 participating schools in the
nation: Burroughs Elementary in Theodore collected
2,002 pounds and St. Mary School in midtown Mobile
collected 1,116 pounds. Each school will receive a
$1,000 gift card from Sam's Club as well as a cash
award from Keep Mobile Beautiful.
Each school received 1,000 fleece jackets to be
donated to needy children in the Mobile area.
Burroughs has chosen Volunteer Mobile to distribute
their jackets and St. Mary School has chosen
Catholic Service Center to distribute
theirs.
The jackets are actually
manufactured from recycled PET (plastic), thus the
recycling circle is complete.
