Hurricane Victims: Non-Food Stamp Households in Seven Alabama Counties Can Apply for Program

Oct 4th, 2004

Mobile is one of seven Alabama counties included in a federally approved plan that permits hurricane victims who are NOT currently receiving food stamps to apply for the program, Mobile County Department of Human Resources Director Rose Johnson announced today.

"This is an effort to help families who find themselves in need of food stamps because of hurricane-related losses of income and other financial resources," she explained.

Ms. Johnson stressed the fact that, in order to receive the benefits, applicants must meet the eligibility criteria established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) which sets forth the regulations for the nation’s Food Stamp Program. She noted that disaster-related food loss alone does not make hurricane victims eligible for food stamp benefits.

The USDA has authorized the Department of Human Resources to accept applications from families in the authorized counties for a five-day period. USDA has authorized this program for a five-day period only. No applications can be accepted beyond the five days authorized. The Mobile County Department of Human Resources will be accepting applications from October 12 through October 16 at the Mobile Civic Center, 401 Civic Center Drive, Mobile from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The application schedule will be based upon the first letter of the head of household’s last name.

  • October 12: A-F

  • October 13: G-K

  • October 14: L-R

  • October 15: S-Z

  • October 16-Make-up Day (Last day to apply).

Identification and proof of residency at the time of the disaster must be presented when applying for benefits. You will be asked to provide the social security number for each household member. Ms. Johnson anticipates substantial numbers of applicants so those applying should be prepared for long lines.

Ms. Johnson said disaster victims who are approved for food stamps will receive their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards in the mail in approximately five days
