Jun 7th, 2004

MOBILE - The U.S. Department of Housing Urban Development has awarded the City of Mobile and Mobile Housing Board with a $20 million Hope VI Revitalization grant. It will be used to restore deteriorating public housing with 387 new family homes. Mobile Housing Board Executive Director, Stevens Gregory, explained the grant is for the Albert Owens/Jesse Thomas Homes and will be used to replace 787 old public housing units with 175 new public units. There will also be 50 rental units and 162 hoses for sale.

HUD will pay for current residents to relocate. Residents who meet the requirements will have the opportunity to move back to the new units after the completion of the project.

The housing units will be a mixed-used and a mixed-income community that will bring businesses back with the new houses. There will be a section of community facilities that promote education, self-sufficiency, employment and even day care for working parents.
