To Let Them Know We Care

Grateful Nation Fund Incorporated

Everyday, we hear about another American losing his or her life in the fight against Terrorism. That means everyday, families suffer the loss of a father or mother. Now to let their families know we as Americans care, a local group of elected officials and private citizens has come together to help these family members financially. The group has formed a non-profit Foundation to assist the families of U-S Servicemen and Women killed in action beginning with the conflict in Afghanistan in 2001 and the war in Iraq in 2003.

Thursday, July 3, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. in the Pavillion at Battleship Park, the seven board members will kick off their fundraising drive and discuss their goals for the foundation. Board members include Mayor Mike Dow, former Congressman Jack Edwards, Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson, Jr., Bill Costarides, Scott Hunter, Gary Hicks and Michael Cumpton.

Donations to the Grateful Nation Fund Incorporated may be made at any Regions Bank Branch. The board plans to use money collected through the foundation to provide funds for families of our military men and women who are killed in war across the country. They will begin accepting applications within about ninety days. Once there is a certain amount of money raised, they will issue certificates to each person-each wife or husband and each child. They will all share an equal amount. However, the amount they receive each month may vary, because the number of people receiving certificates may change as will the amount of money in the fund.

This idea is way overdue, according to Mayor Dow and his fellow board members. It's close to their hearts, and they hope it will be close to yours as well.
