GOVERNMENT STREET MARKET OPENS SATURDAY, APRIL 12
Apr 4th, 2003
Mobile, Alabama, April 4, 2003 - Downtown's freshest spot, the Government Street Market, will open for the spring season Saturday, April 12. The market, a growers only market, will be open every Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. through June 28.
The Government Street Market is a public market initiative of Main Street Mobile that began in 2000 as a way to provide fresh produce to downtown residents and nearby neighborhoods and historic districts while giving local growers an outlet to sell their produce. The success of the 2000 market has had a positive impact on downtown Mobile bringing between 500 and 3,000 shoppers out each Saturday morning. The Government Street Market has become noted as a popular Saturday morning gathering place for friends to shop, and a resource for the freshest produce available in our area. The Government Street Market has served as a model community market - spinning off and reviving farmers markets in Mobile and Baldwin Counties. As a result of the Government Street Market's popularity, the Halls Mill Road Farmers Market was reopened, and new markets in Elberta, Fairhope, Daphne and Bay Minette have opened.
The Government Street Market is located at the corner of Government Street and Jackson Street with free parking available adjacent to the market. Market season will open with growers selling early spring vegetables, strawberries, blueberries, fresh-cut flowers, bedding plants, citrus trees, rose bushes, honey, beeswax, jellies, vinegar's, wine, and eggs. One of the most popular vendors is James Jackson Seafood who will be selling shrimp, oysters, crab meat and a variety of fish. Vendors registered to sell during the spring season to date include:
