Government Street at Conception Closed Intermittently This Weekend

Two westbound lanes of Government Street near the Bankhead Tunnel will be closed to traffic intermittently this weekend as contractors for Mobile Area Water & Sewer System (MAWSS) begin laying a new sewer line along Conception Street. Motorists are urged to use caution when entering or exiting the tunnel as workers may be present. Westbound traffic will be allowed to flow during the lane closures, but some delays can be expected. All lanes on Government St. are expected to reopen to traffic on Monday. However, Conception Street from Government to Conti Streets will be limited to local traffic during the remainder of the construction project.

The new line replaces a segment of defective concrete sewer pipe discovered while MAWSS crews were performing preventive video inspections in the area. McCrory & Williams designed the emergency project with Hughes Plumbing and Utility Contractor, Inc. submitting the low bid for $245,812. MAWSS crews are taking steps to prevent backups and overflows in the area.
