Gov. Ivey orders flags to half-staff in honor of Maj. Gen. J. Gary Cooper
Mobile, Ala. — At the request of Mayor Sandy Stimpson, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has ordered United States flags in Mobile County to be flown at half-staff on Thursday, May 2, 2024, in honor of the late Major General Jerome Gary Cooper, USMC-Retired.
General Cooper was a decorated Marine who continued to give years of service to the City of Mobile, the State of Alabama and our country after his exceptional military career ended. In addition to his work in the private section, General Cooper continued to serve the public as a member of the Alabama House of Representatives, as the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force and as the U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica.
General Cooper will be laid to rest at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort on Thursday, May 2. Flags in Mobile and at state facilities in Montgomery will be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset. A copy of the memorandum from Gov. Ivey’s office authorizing the flag lowering is attached.
Thank you,
