Forum on race in Mobile rescheduled

Jun 10th, 2014

MOBILE, Ala. - An upcoming community forum on race relations in Mobile, previously scheduled for June 11, is being rescheduled to give organizers more time to develop the format and agenda for the event.

Mayor Sandy Stimpson announced his intention to create the forum, titled "Moving Forward: An Honest Conversation about Race in Mobile," during a news conference on May 30.

Since then, Mobile United, a non-profit community-based organization, stepped forward to help facilitate the event and develop an ongoing initiative aimed at promoting unity in Mobile.

"Mobile United shares Mayor Stimpson's vision of One Mobile, and we are pleased to be part of the effort to achieve it," said Katherine Pitman, executive director of Mobile United. "Our mission is to improve or enhance life for all citizens in our community, and we see Mobile United as a natural fit to help lead this initiative."

More specific information about the time and location of the forum will be provided at a later date, along with additional details about the agenda and participants.

Stimpson said the goal is to create an ongoing dialog about racial unity as opposed to a single event.

"Truly inclusive and prosperous communities aren't built in a day," Stimpson said. "My hope is that this won't be a one-time conversation but rather the first of many steps toward One Mobile."
