Foley Scholarship to Extend Service Experience for Spring Hill Students

Mobile, Ala. - Spring Hill College will honor longtime civil rights activist and professor Albert F. Foley, S.J. this fall by creating an additional scholarship for students interested in community service and outreach. Available to students from across the country, the Foley Scholarship will complement two existing service scholarships for students from Mobile and from Jesuit high schools. A public reception to kick off fundraising for the scholarship and to honor Fr. Foley’s achievements will be held Tuesday, April 27, from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the Gautrelet Room on the College campus..

A leader in the struggle for integration during the civil rights era, Rev. Albert S. Foley, S.J. worked throughout his life to improve opportunities for African-Americans and for the poor in the Mobile area. The Foley Community Service Center at Spring Hill College was founded in 1992 to honor his memory by organizing students to serve the people of the community. Today, more than 400 students perform more than 10,000 service hours per year in local schools, community centers and nursing homes.
