Florida Students Coming to Mobile to Design Plans for Downtown
Oct 4th, 2010
The City of Mobile’s vision for the future is about to get a kick start from a group of college students. Senior architectural students from Florida A&M University descended on Mobile to take plans for improved sidewalks, renovated buildings, and enhanced infrastructure and turn them into reality.
Led by their Harvard-educated professor, Roy Knight, the students will conceptualize specific locations where the city’s master plan has outlined possible improvements. Professor Knight has led similar planning studies in San Francisco and Chattanooga. Pairs of students will focus on the following locations:
• Broad Street (Corridor between Government St. & Spring Hill Ave.);
• Broad Street and Spring Hill Avenue intersection;
• Broad Street and Government Street intersection;
• S. Broad Street (Corridor between I-10 & Selma St.);
• Cawthon Hotel parking lot (at Bienville Square);
• Dauphin Street and Saint Francis Street;
• Michigan Avenue and Government Street intersection;
• Spring Hill Avenue and Ann Street intersection;
• Fort Conde Village.
The project will develop plans for actual building space, emphasizing housing along with office and retail space.
