Firefighter of the Month

Oct 30th, 2008

Mobile Fire-Rescue Department Firefighter-Driver Mike Diegan, 40, a veteran with over 18 years was traveling to work at approximately 6 a.m. one recent morning when he encountered traffic backed up on the roadway, only to discover there had been an accident involving two vehicles up ahead that had flipped and was now resting upside down. Despite the traffic being at a stand still Diegan pulled around and passed the stationary vehicles and pulled off the roadway passed where the wreck had occurred.

Once Diegan made his way back to the crashed vehicles he discovered one person was suffering from what appeared to be minor injuries and another covered in blood. Diegan quickly assessed the patients injuries and called Mobile Fire-Rescue Department Dispatchers to send assistance to the scene.

While waiting for emergency crews to arrive, Diegan performed Basic Life Support to the victim which included bleeding control and c-spine stabilization.

Soon Mobile Fire-Rescue crews arrived and took control of the scene.

To some obviously it would be easy to pass by and simply call 9-1-1 for the victims but Diegan is a firefighter on and off duty. Without thought, he stopped to render aid and provide support for those injured until help arrived.

This is typical of Firefighter-Driver Mike Diegan’s dedication to his job and the citizens of Mobile. Therefore, Firefighter-Driver Mike Diegan is the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department’s Firefighter of the Month for October 2008. The FFOM is sponsored by the Pleasant Valley Opportunity Club.
