Drainage Improvements Coming to N. Bayou Street

Aug 19th, 2009

A groundbreaking ceremony at 251 N. Bayou St. was held on Wednesday, Aug. 19, to mark the start of a project that will eliminate a problem that people visiting the Mobile County Health Department’s facility at that address have had to deal with for more than 30 years. That problem is extensive flooding of Bayou Street that occurs whenever there is heavy rainfall.

According to Dr. Bert Eichold, Health Officer, Mobile City Councilmember William Carroll of District 2 began working to remedy the problem as soon as he became aware of the situation. As a result of his efforts, the Mobile City Council at its July 7 meeting adopted a resolution introduced by Carroll authorizing a $128,985.09 contract with Peavy Construction Co. to rehabilitate the Bayou Street drainage system. The project will take approximately 60 days to complete.

“There were more than 70,000 visits to our Bayou Street facility for various services last year,” Eichold said. “Now, thanks to Mayor Sam Jones and the city council, patrons will soon be able to cross Bayou Street from our parking lot and then back without going through knee-deep water.”
