Downtown Mobile to Serve as Finish Line for Antique Car Race, Other Activities Planned

Jun 24th, 2013

Downtown Mobile, Ala. will serve as the finish line host for The Great Race, a nine-day, 2,100-mile competitive controlled-speed endurance road rally on public highways. Not a test of top speed, the Race instead focuses on a driver/navigator team’s ability to follow precise course instructions and the car’s (and team’s) ability to endure on a cross-country trip. This year’s Great Race features 100 antique and vintage vehicles, of the 1969 model year and older. Since the start in St. Paul, Minn. on Saturday, June 22, the Race has followed along the Mississippi River on its way towards the finish line in downtown Mobile’s Bienville Square. On Sunday, June 30, the cars will exit off of I-10 onto Canal Street, taking Jackson Street to Dauphin Street where they’ll turn right, circling Bienville Square before finishing near the intersection of Dauphin and Conception Streets.

As part of the celebration of The Great Race finish, downtown Mobile will be buzzing with the energy of thousands of expected spectators as well as up to 300 vintage and antique vehicles from classic car clubs around the Gulf Coast. Also, the Saenger Theatre is planning a special showing of the musical classic Grease and downtown’s brunch, lunch and dinner spots will be open for those planning a meal during the day.
