Donations Being Accepted for Gucci Memorial Garden

Mar 25th, 2010

The Friends of the Mobile Animal Shelter, a 501(c)3 organization, is accepting donations to build the Gucci Memorial Garden on the grounds of the City of Mobile Animal Shelter at 855 Owens Street. The garden will be the final resting place of Gucci, a goodwill ambassador for the shelter who died Wednesday.

Gucci, a Chow-husky mix, was three months old when he was hanged from a tree, repeatedly hit in the face and kicked, and finally doused with lighter fluid and set on fire the night of Thursday, May 19, 1994. After numerous operations, he went on to live under the care of Dr. Doug James, a professor at Spring Hill College.

Over the years Gucci has been the recipient of awards, citations, and other forms of recognition. He was named Alabama’s Official State Spokesdog Against Animal Cruelty. In May, 2000, exactly six years following his abuse, the Alabama State Legislature passed a bill making intentional cruelty to domesticated animals a Class C felony, punishable with a prison term of up to 10 years. The bill was signed into law, with Gucci looking on, on May 20, 2000.
