DISTRICT 5

Improvements in Storm Water Management

Mobile's City Council District 5 is located in the heart of our City. We have major shopping centers, numerous hotels and motels, new car dealerships, a new Super Wal-Mart, new Sam's Wholesale Club, Lowes, and an abundance of restaurants. A new Ruby Tuesday's is under construction at McGregor Square. What does all of this mean? JOBS, JOBS, JOBS and revenue for our city.

To improve the condition of streets and roads in District 5, resurfacing projects are under way now with more to come later this spring. We are upgrading interchanges on Airport Blvd. and Government Street to make them safer for motorists and we have just completed a new walking & jogging trail along Montlimar Creek. The trail begins at Airport Blvd. and ends at Michael Blvd. Thanks to Arkema, Incorporated for providing the funds.

Soon, construction will begin on a park in the Loop area of Mobile that will serve many families. Thank you T. Bruce McKinnon for your leadership on this project, and to all the volunteers who are working to make this park a reality.

The most notable achievements in District 5, are the more than 15-million dollars in Storm Water Management improvements that have been made in the last 9 years. I am especially proud to have been able to provide the leadership to fund this enormous project and get the work done.

There are plenty of challenges ahead including expanding our police and fire departments to include new precincts and fire stations in West Mobile; increasing the salaries of our devoted and hard working city employees; cleaning up the litter and trash that detracts from our beautiful city; and making sure all of our streets and sidewalks are safe for motorists and pedestrians.

There are so many things I am proud of in this city. One is the line of cars filled with visitors I see every week entering the Cruise Terminal embarking on a Caribbean Cruise aboard the HOLIDAY—our very own homeported cruise ship. I am also proud when I see the Gulf Coast Exploreum packed with people waiting to see the Dead Sea Scrolls. Charter buses bring thousands of visitors to Mobile everyday to see this once in a lifetime exhibit.

Mobile is a great place to live, work and play. I am proud to serve all the citizens and will continue to work to make our community even better.
