Councilman Burrell Announces His Resignation from the Council

Oct 9th, 2012

Mobile City Councilman Jermaine A. Burrell announced his resignation from the Mobile City Council effective Tuesday, November 20, 2012, during today's regularly scheduled City Council Meeting.

"Today is bittersweet as I announce my resignation from the District Three City Council seat effective Tuesday, November 20, 2012, to pursue a career opportunity as an Information Technology Executive" said Burrell. "The past three years have been marked with many challenges and successes along the way that have truly built the foundation for a sustainable future of growth for our community."

Burrell who defeated longtime incumbent Clinton Johnson, Sr. during a 2009 run-off election has been a visionary leader for the District Three community. Throughout his tenure, Burrell based his leadership on three guiding principles to respect, empower and engage the citizens of District Three. He implemented these principles by establishing an open door policy to provide citizens with direct access to their local government, facilitating quarterly District Community Meetings, forming a District Three Cluster Leadership structure consisting of community leaders from each area of the district geographically and applying a technology driven communication strategy, integrating social media, the worldwide web, and eNewsletters for effective two-way communication with his constituents.

"Ending my Council tenure prematurely, is certainly not a decision I came to lightly but, it became necessary for me professionally after being unable to obtain a career opportunity here in the Mobile area," said Burrell.

Known for his reserved demeanor, some of Burrell's most notable district accomplishments are the relocation of the Parkway Senior Center in the South Dauphin Island Parkway Community, upgrades to the Baumhauer-Randall (Duval) Park in the Maysville Community and the complete renovation and re-opening of the Taylor (Baltimore) Park Pool in the Oakdale Community.

Burrell has also been instrumental in creating a District Three Homeowner Rehab Program to provide funding for home renovations of District Three citizens and laying the groundwork to establish a District Three Community Redevelopment Corporation, a non-profit agency, aimed at redeveloping the district and working with the City of Mobile to address blight, capital needs, infrastructure issues and economic development opportunities throughout the district.

"Though my time representing District Three on the City Council is coming to an end, I am proud of the accomplishments we have made together as a community," said Burrell. "I will always represent the community of my roots in all of life's endeavors. I sincerely hope the new leadership will continue to build upon the guiding principles to respect, empower and engage the citizens of District Three."
