Copeland-Cox Named Finest Tennis Center in America

Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) presented its annual awards during the 2008 PTR International Tennis Symposium. The event, which includes 60-plus on court and classroom presentations, a tennis trade show and $25,000 Championships was held February 16-21, 2008, at Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

With 60 courts, the Mobile Tennis Center is the world's largest municipal tennis facility. In the summer of 2007, a $2 million renovation was completed with 10 new courts and shade shelters, resurfacing and new lighting. It boasts four QuickStart Tennis Courts which are formatted and utilized for 60 foot and 36 foot courts. The Copeland-Cox Center was host to 20 tournaments last year, including the NAIA National Collegiate Tournament, and have played nine college matches simultaneously. The economic impact of the 2007 tournaments was more than $28 million into the city of Mobile. Copeland-Cox runs seven Junior Programs sessions annually, and touches approximately 140 youth per session. In addition, it is the host site for 12 different high school teams. League tennis is extremely popular in Mobile. USTA League matches fill all 60 courts several nights per week.

PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with 13,000 members in 126 countries. It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and servicing tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
