Community Conversation on Race - Mobile in Black and White

Mobile, Al - Mobile United will hold their upcoming Community Conversations on Race at The American Red Cross, Bishop State Community College , Spring Hill College and The Crescent Theatre throughout the month of October. Mobile United will feature segments from the University of South Alabama award-winning documentary, "Mobile in Black and White," written and produced by Dr. Joèl Lewis and Dr. Rob Gray. Each week a different segment of the documentary will be shown, followed by a facilitator-led community conversation with the exception of the showing at the Crescent Theatre, where the film will be shown in its entirety.
The documentary, "Mobile in Black and White" speaks to existing racial inequity in Mobile. It takes a hard look at the ways racism continues to pervade the structures and institutions of a supposedly post-racial world. Through breaking the documentary into smaller parts, it is designed to segue into productive conversations with its viewers. "Mobile in Black and White" has been accepted into over ten film festivals around the country, including: The Los Angeles Diversity Film festival, the San Diego Black Film Festival, the Awareness Film Festival in Santa Monica, CA the South Alabama Film Festival. The film recently won 2nd place in best feature film category at the Dallas Black Film Festival. It was also named one of the Top 50 Research, Scholarly, and Creative Works in the history of the University of South Alabama.
The dates and times of the documentary showings are as follows:
- October 15th, 22nd, 29th and November 5th from 11:30 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. at Bishop State Community College (Baker Gaines Campus, Museum) Brown Bag Lunch.
- October 20th, 27th November 3rd and 10th from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at The American Red Cross on Sage Avenue
- October 23rd at the Crescent Theatre at 8:30 p.m. in downtown Mobile * note this is the full feature length documentary
- October 28th, November 3rd, 11th and 18th from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Spring Hill College inside the Gautrelet Room
The first official community conversation was held on September 22nd, where attendees were introduced to The Mobile Pledge and then broke into conversations amongst themselves.
