College Honors Wayne D. McRae with Plaza Dedication

Oct 23rd, 2003

MOBILE, Ala. - A ceremony honoring longtime City of Mobile employee and philanthropist Wayne D. McRae will be held Friday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. on the Spring Hill campus. Spring Hill College President Gregory F. Lucey, S.J. will dedicate The Wayne D. McRae Plaza near the entrance to Moore Hall in recognition of a gift from the Wayne D. McRae Charitable Endowment Fund. The
dedication will coincide with Friday's opening of Spring Hill’s annual Family Weekend celebration Oct. 24-26.

Wayne Denson McRae, a very quiet and often private man, worked in the City Architect's office and resided in the Oakleigh Historic District before his death in 1997. McRae established an endowment fund at the Community Foundation of South Alabama with his accumulated wealth of almost $1.9 million to be used at the Foundation's discretion. Yuell Busey, Board Member for the Wayne D. McRae Charitable Endowment Fund, stated that it was Wayne's passion for gardening and his love for beautiful settings that provided the incentive to name a green space on Spring Hill College's campus in memory of Mr. McRae.
