City Says Thank You to Chief Phillip Garrett

Sep 22nd, 2009

At the Mobile City Council meeting on Tuesday, September 22, 2009, Mayor Sam Jones, the City Council, and the entire Command Staff of the Mobile Police Department honored Chief Phillip Garrett who will retire next month after 38 years of service to the City of Mobile. Mayor Jones presented Chief Garrett with personalized gifts, and a giant Thank You card signed by city employees, and other friends.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have the support of the entire police department,” said Chief Garrett. “I believe that we have made progress over the past three-and-a-half years, and I am sure that Mayor Jones will make a wise choice as the department moves forward.”

Chief Garrett began his career as a Police Cadet back in September of 1971. He rose through the ranks over the years, and served in nearly every aspect of the police profession, including Patrol, Internal Affairs, Crime Prevention, Community Services, and numerous other command positions. Mayor Sam Jones appointed him Police Chief in July of 2006.

Chief Garrett is well known for his commitment to a number of charitable endeavors with Camp Rap-A-Hope being at the top of the list. Chief Garrett's major accomplishments over more than three years of service as Chief Executive Officer are bringing the staffing of the department to unprecedented levels, the reduction of crime throughout the city, and a continuous increase in professionalism through expanded management and organizational goals.

Mayor Jones has said that Chief Garrett’s replacement will come from an internal search from the Command Staff of the Mobile Police Department.
